Nabulus (English spelling)

Japanese: ナーブルス（英語表記）Nābulus

A city on the west bank of the Jordan River in central Palestine. It is located in a fertile valley about 50 km north of Jerusalem. It has been part of Jordan since 1950 and was the capital of Nablus Governorate, but has been under Israeli occupation since 1967. The new town, located on the hillside, is an upscale residential area, and the old town below that has a market, mosque, and government office. The ruins of Shechem, mentioned in the Old Testament, border the town on the east and are known to have been inhabited since about 1900 BC. The present town was built under the protection of the Roman emperor in 72 AD and was called Neapolis. The present name is a corruption of that. According to legend, Jacob's Well and Joseph's Tomb are located nearby. Population: 106,944 (1987 estimate).

中部パレスチナ，ヨルダン川西岸の都市。エルサレムの北約 50kmの肥沃な渓谷に位置する。 1950年からヨルダン領で，ナーブルス県の県都であったが，67年以降イスラエルの占領下にある。小高い丘の中腹にある新市街は高級住宅街，その下手の旧市街には市場，モスク，役所などがある。旧約聖書のシケムの遺跡は，町に東接し，前 1900年頃から居住者のあったことが知られている。現在の町は西暦 72年ローマ皇帝の保護下に建てられ，ネアポリスと呼ばれた。現名はその転化である。伝説によれば，付近にヤコブの井戸とヨセフの墓がある。人口 10万 6944 (1987推計) 。
