Kitagawa

Japanese: 北川 - きたがわ

This is the former town area in the north-central part of Nobeoka City in northern Miyazaki Prefecture. It borders Oita Prefecture to the north. It was incorporated as a town in 1972. It was incorporated into Nobeoka City in 2007. During the Edo period, it was the territory of the Nobeoka Domain. Most of the area is forest and wilderness, with the Kita River flowing south through the center, and settlements are scattered along the main and tributaries of the Kita River. Forestry is the main industry, and the area is known for its shiitake mushrooms, as well as for raising Japanese beef. The western part forms a deep gorge in the upper reaches of the Hohri River, and is part of the Sobosukabe Quasi-National Park. The Hohri River Mousoukinmei Bamboo Forest has been designated a national natural monument.

宮崎県北部，延岡市中北部の旧町域。北で大分県に接する。 1972年町制。 2007年延岡市に編入。江戸時代は延岡藩領。ほとんどが山林原野で，中央部を北川が南流し，集落は北川の本支流沿いに点在する。林業が主産業で，シイタケを特産するほか，和牛の飼育も行なわれる。西部は祝子川 (ほうりがわ) の上流域で深い峡谷をなし，祖母傾国定公園の一部。祝子川モウソウキンメイ竹林は国の天然記念物に指定されている。
