Fiji is the largest island in the South Pacific. It has an area of 10,429 km2 and a population of about 400,000. The central part of the island, which has many mountains including the highest peak Mount Tomanibi (1,324m), is a vast highland, and many rivers flow out of it, including the Rewa River and the Sigatoka River. 80% of the population lives on the plains at the mouths of the rivers. The northwestern part of the island is dry and has little rain, and is home to towns such as Nadi, which has an international airport that is popular with tourists, and Lautoka, Fiji's second largest town and sugar shipping port. The southeastern part of the island, which is home to the capital Suva and Nausori, which has an airport connecting the country and neighboring island countries, receives more rain.
