...Furthermore, with the inauguration of the French Fifth Republic in 1958, it became an autonomous republic within the French Community, and achieved complete independence on August 13, 1960. David Dacko, who became the first president, outlawed the opposition in December of that year and established a one-party system of the Black African Social Development Movement. He attempted to promote nation building through a pro-French approach, but the economy gradually declined and the country's finances went bankrupt. In this context, a general strike occurred in December 1965, causing political instability, and Colonel Jean Bédel Bokassa, Dacko's cousin, staged a coup d'état, seized power, and became president in January 1966.
