A general term for the genus Nerine, part of the Amaryllidaceae family (APG classification: Amaryllidaceae). The genus name means "goddess of the sea," and the English name "diamond lily" comes from the way the flowers shine. There are 31 species distributed in southern Africa. It looks similar to the red spider lily, but the stems are not hollow and the flowers last longer. It blooms in autumn, but the hybrid species blooms one month later than the red spider lily, from mid-October to mid-November. There are also unique varieties that bloom in summer and winter. The flowers come in all colors except yellow, and recent hybrids include beautiful ones such as bicolor flowers. The Bodenii species is high-growing and has thin, pink petals. It can be grown outdoors in areas west of Tokyo. The Sarniensis species is the most beautiful species in the genus. There are also large, thick-stemmed species, including the parent species Flexusosa alba, which has a low flowering rate, and the Manserii species, a late-flowering, multi-flowering, pale yellow-white horticultural species. For cut flowers and potted plants, plant the bulbs from late August to early September. Large bulb varieties are planted in three bulbs per No. 5 pot. The soil should be a mixture of equal parts Kanuma soil, sand, peat moss, and smoked charcoal, with particular attention to good drainage. The trick is to plant them without cutting the roots. With the exception of two or three alpine species, the bulbs are not very cold-tolerant and can withstand temperatures as low as -3°C for short periods, but need to be kept warm during extreme cold. Fertilizer with a low nitrogen content applied early on will suffice.
