[Died] July 5, 1969. Santa Monica, California. American film director, screenwriter, and producer. Full name Thomas Leo McCarey. Specialized in light comedies and sentimental dramas. After graduating from the University of Southern California Law School, McCarey worked as an assistant director under director Tod Browning, and then joined Hal Roach Studios in 1923 as a director and screenwriter for comedy films. Two years later, he became vice president of the company. He supervised 19 films starring popular comedic actors Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy (directing three of them), honing his sense of comedy. In 1933, he signed with Paramount Pictures. His first directorial work after the move was Duck Soup (1933), starring the Marx Brothers, which was not well received when it was released, but is now considered one of the greatest comedies in history. He won an Academy Award for Best Director for the romantic comedy masterpiece The Awful Truth (1937). Going My Way (1944), starring Bing Crosby, won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. In his later years, he suffered personal troubles and a serious car accident, and the number of films he made dropped dramatically. His only representative work was An Affair to Remember (1957), a remake of his own hit film Love Affair (1939).
