Mansaku Itami

Japanese:
Mansaku Itami

Scriptwriter and film director. His real name was Yoshitoyo Ikeuchi. He was born on January 2, 1900 in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture. He graduated from Matsuyama Middle School. He briefly worked as an illustrator, but then entered the film industry at the urging of his middle school classmate Daisuke Ito. He joined Nikkatsu in 1927 (Showa 2), and moved to Chiezo Productions the following year, becoming a director with "Ada Uchiruten." He introduced satirical fantasy to period dramas with "Kokushi Musou" (1932), which became his breakthrough work. In "Budo Taikan" (1934), "Chuji Uridashi," "Sengoku Kitan: Whimsical Crown Prince" (1935), and "Akanishi Kaita" (1936), he used a civic humanitarianism to humor the martial spirit of period dramas. This style of writing was considered intelligent and fresh in the 1930s, and he was considered a pioneer in the innovation of period dramas. In 1937 he released the Japanese-German co-production Atarashiki Tsuchi (New Earth). The following year he directed Kyojin Den (The Legend of the Giants), after which he was forced to fight an illness. From then on he devoted himself to writing screenplays for Muhomatsu no Isshou (The Life of a Outlaw Matsu) and Te wo Tsunagu Kotora (Children Holding Hands), as well as writing film theory and social criticism. He passed away on September 21, 1946. The film director and actor Itami Juzo is his eldest son.
