Independence Association (English: Tokrip hyǒphoe)

A political organization that launched a mass movement for national independence and freedom and civil rights in Korea at the end of the 19th century. It was founded in July 1896 by Lee Sang-jae, Seo Jae-pil, Yun Chi-ho, Lee Wanyong, and others. The association published its journal, the Independence Association Bulletin, and gained support from the general public through the publication of the Hangul-only Independence Newspaper and activities to build the Independence Gate, and is said to have reached 10,000 members in just three months. In this way, the association transformed from an organization to educate the public into a political organization, and achieved many results by mobilizing citizens to hold a people's joint meeting to eliminate Russia, which was interfering in military, financial, and personnel rights. It also demanded the government to completely abolish anonymous taxation, while criticizing the government for the poisoned tea incident and encouraging the people to become more self-aware. In October 1898, the association held a joint public-private meeting with the government and private sectors, and resolved on six points to improve national politics. However, the government rendered the resolution meaningless and used every means possible to suppress the association's leaders, including appeasement and arrests.In the same year, the government implicated the Imperial Association, causing a bloody incident and forcing the Independence Association to disband.

19世紀末，朝鮮で国家の自主独立と自由民権のために大衆運動を展開した政治団体。建陽1 (1896) 年7月に李商在，徐載弼，尹致昊，李完用らを中心に結成された。協会は機関誌『独立協会報』をもち，またハングル専用の『独立新聞』の発行，独立門建設活動などにより一般大衆の支持を受け，わずか3ヵ月で会員約1万名に達したという。こうして協会は民衆啓蒙団体から政治団体に変化し，軍事，財政，人事権にまで干渉するロシアを排除するため，市民を動員して万民共同会を開催して多くの成果を得た。また政府に無名徴税の全廃などを要求する一方，毒茶事件などをめぐって政府を指弾し，民衆の自覚を促した。協会は光武2 (98) 年 10月に官民合同による官民共同会を開催し，国政改善のための6ヵ条を決議した。しかし政府は決議案を空文化させ，協会幹部を懐柔，逮捕などのあらゆる手段を用いて弾圧し，同3年には皇国協会を示唆して流血事件を引起させ，独立協会を解散に追込んだ。
