The oldest of the five academies at the Institut de France. Around 1633, when Prime Minister Richelieu discovered a literary club-like gathering at the home of the poet Valentin Conrart (1603-1675), he established it as an official institution and tried to incorporate it into his cultural policy of unifying and purifying the French language. The society was officially inaugurated in 1635 under the name of the Académie Française. Since King Louis XIV himself became its patron in 1672, it has been under the jurisdiction of successive heads of state. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
