A military commander in the late Muromachi period. Kanrei (regent) of the Muromachi shogunate. His childhood name was Soumeimaru. He was from the Hosokawa clan, the guardian of Awa, and was the son of Hosokawa Sumimoto, who was adopted by Kanrei Hosokawa Masamoto. He lived in Awa (Tokushima Prefecture) because his father was chased by Kanrei Hosokawa Takakuni. In March 1527 (Taiei 7), he landed in Sakai with Ashikaga Yoshitsuna, supported by Miyoshi Motonaga of Awa, and thereafter ruled the Kinai region from Kenponji Temple in Sakai as his base. In 1532 (Tenbun 1), he was chased out of Sakai by the Ikko Ikki and fled to Awaji. In 1800, he escaped from Awaji and entered Ikeda Castle in Settsu (Ikeda City, Osaka Prefecture), then moved to Akutagawa Castle (Takatsuki City), ruling the Kinai region from this base until 1803. In September of the same year, he finally entered Kyoto, and maintained power as Kanrei for the next 16 years. However, in 1804, he was defeated by Miyoshi Nagayoshi in the Battle of Eguchi (Higashiyodogawa Ward, Osaka City), and fled to Omi with the former Shogun Yoshiharu and Shogun Yoshiteru, and finally Harumoto's government collapsed. Harumoto was the last Kanrei to wield real power, and the last person to hold the Shogunate power among the Hosokawa clan, which had effectively controlled the Shogunate since Masamoto. He died at Fumonji Temple in Settsu on March 1, 1560.
