...A biennial plant of the Euphorbiaceae family (illustration), commonly found on roadsides and riverbanks on flat land. Widely distributed in the warm temperate zone of Eurasia, it is found in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu in Japan. It grows to about 30cm in height. When cut, it exudes a white milky liquid and is poisonous. The leaves are alternate, obovate, and finely serrated. Five whorls of leaves grow at the end of the stem, and five branches bear yellow-green, broad ovate bracts and dense cup-shaped inflorescences about 2mm in diameter. The Japanese name comes from the resemblance of this unusual plant shape to an old lighthouse. It flowers from April to May. ...

…平地の路傍や河畔に普通に見られるトウダイグサ科の二年草（イラスト）。ユーラシアの暖温帯に広く分布し，日本では本州，四国，九州に産する。高さ30cm内外。切ると白色の乳液が浸出し，有毒。葉は互生し，倒卵形で細かい鋸歯がある。茎の先に5枚の輪生葉が生じ，5本の分枝に黄緑色で広卵形の苞葉と，径2mmほどの杯状花序を密につける。和名はこの風変りな草形を昔の灯台に見立てたことに由来している。花期は4～5月ごろ。…
