...A biennial plant of the Euphorbiaceae family (illustration), commonly found on roadsides and riverbanks on flat land. Widely distributed in the warm temperate zone of Eurasia, it is found in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu in Japan. It grows to about 30cm in height. When cut, it exudes a white milky liquid and is poisonous. The leaves are alternate, obovate, and finely serrated. Five whorls of leaves grow at the end of the stem, and five branches bear yellow-green, broad ovate bracts and dense cup-shaped inflorescences about 2mm in diameter. The Japanese name comes from the resemblance of this unusual plant shape to an old lighthouse.
