The French Academy of Sciences was founded in 1666 at the initiative of Louis XIV's minister JB Colbert. It was abolished in 1793 during the French Revolution, but was revived as part of the French Academy in 1795, and its name was changed from the original Académie royale des Sciences to its current name. It currently consists of 11 departments of natural sciences, with a membership limit of 98, including two secretaries. The scientific revolution in Western Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries took place mainly outside of universities. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
