Tomonori Hatta

Japanese:
Tomonori Hatta

A poet from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. A samurai of the Satsuma domain. Nicknamed Kizaemon and pen name Toukou, he moved to Tokyo to study waka poetry under Kagawa Kageki (Keien), and as a Keien school poet he attracted attention for his debate with his senior Kumagai Naoyoshi over the interpretation of Kageki's preface to "Kokin Wakashu Seigi." After the Meiji Restoration, he served the Imperial Household Ministry as a waka-do official. As a native of the Satsuma domain and with fellow domain poets Takasaki Masakaze, Kuroda Kiyotsuna, and Saisho Atsuko as his disciples, he established the Keien school of waka poetry in the Imperial Court's poetry office. His poetry treatises based on Kageki's Shirabe no Setsu (The Theory of the Rhythm) include "Chiyo no Kodo" and "Tadaji no Choji," and his anthologies include "Shinobu-gusa" and "Miyakojima-shu." He is counted as one of the Ten Philosophers of the Katsura School. He died on September 2, 1873, at the age of 75.
