A volcanic island at the mouth of Manila Bay in the southwest of Luzon in the Philippines. It is a key defense point for Manila across the strait from the Bataan Peninsula. In the 18th century it was a Spanish fort, and in the 20th century it became a US military base. During the Pacific War, it was the site of the fiercest battle between Japan and the US-Philippines Allied Forces from April to May 1942. Today, the US military fort and barracks have been turned into a memorial park and are a tourist destination for foreigners. Approximately 5 km2 .
