A businessman and politician of the Meiji and Taisho periods. Born on January 3, 1845, as the son of a samurai of Takamatsu Domain. His name can also be read as "Takenaka." During his time as a junior secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, he became acquainted with Kono Togama, and during the political upheaval of 1881, he followed Okuma Shigenobu and went into the opposition with Kono, Ono Azusa, and others, and participated in the founding of the Constitutional Reform Party. From the first general election in 1890 (Meiji 23), he was elected to the House of Representatives eight times in a row, and in 1914 (Taisho 3), he became chairman of the Tokyo City Council and worked to clean up the city council. During this time, he served as chairman of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, president of Kansai Railway, and president of Nisshin Life Insurance, among others, and as the successor to Eiichi Shibusawa, he served as chairman of the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce from 1905 to 1916, and contributed greatly to the business world, including being a central figure in the anti-business tax movement. He died on October 8, 1918.
