A city in the central part of the state of São Paulo in the southeast of Brazil. It is located 140 km northwest of the city of São Paulo, at an altitude of 540 meters. It has a population of 329,158 (2000). It is the center of a major sugarcane-growing region, and also produces cotton, rice, corn, tobacco, and coffee, which are traded and processed. The sugar refining and agricultural machinery industries are also well developed. It has a well-known agricultural university, and an agricultural festival is held in October.
