Nagano City is located in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture, occupying the central part of the Nagano Basin and the mountainous area to the west. It was incorporated as a city in 1897 and is the prefectural capital. The central city started as a temple town of Zenkoji Temple long ago, and developed as a post town and market town on the Hokkoku Kaido road during the Edo period. The Hokuriku Shinkansen, Shinetsu Main Line, Shinano Railway, Nagano Electric Railway, Joshinetsu Expressway, and Nagano Expressway run through the city, and residential and industrial development is progressing rapidly. Although it has a strong consumer city character, in recent years, industries such as electrical machinery, publishing and printing, and food have flourished, and the city's manufactured goods shipment value was 422.1 billion yen (2003), making it the third largest in the prefecture. In the rural areas, vegetable and apple cultivation is thriving. Amori in the southwest is a specialty area for apricots. Mt. Iizuna and Mt. Togakushi in the north are part of Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park. The city is home to the Kawanakajima battlefield, Togakushi Shrine, and the Faculty of Education and Faculty of Engineering of Shinshu University. It was the main venue for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano Prefecture. In January 2005, Ooka Village in Sarashina County, Toyono Town, Togakushi Village, and Kinasa Village in Kamiminochi County were incorporated, and in January 2010, Shinshu-Shinmachi Town and Nakajo Village in Kamiminochi County were incorporated. 長野県北部,長野盆地の中央部とその西方の山地を占める市。1897年市制。県庁所在地。中心市街は古く善光寺の門前町として起こり,江戸時代,北国街道の宿場町,市場町として発展。北陸新幹線,信越本線,しなの鉄道,長野電鉄,上信越自動車道,長野自動車道が通じ宅地化,工場地化が急速に進んでいる。消費都市的色彩が濃いが,近年は電機,出版・印刷,食品などの工業が盛んで,4221億円(2003)の製造品出荷額を上げ,県内3位である。農村部は野菜,リンゴの栽培が盛ん。南西部の安茂里はアンズの特産地。北部の飯縄(いいづな)山や戸隠山は妙高戸隠連山国立公園の一部。川中島古戦場,戸隠神社,信州大学教育学部・工学部がある。1998年の長野県での冬季オリンピックの主会場。2005年1月更級郡大岡村,上水内郡豊野町,戸隠村,鬼無里村を,2010年1月上水内郡信州新町,中条村を編入。834.81km2。38万1511人(2010)。
