Futomani - Futomani

A type of divination used in ancient times. It involves burning a stag's shoulder bone with the bark of a hahaka tree (an old name for the Uwamizu cherry tree), and then divination is based on the pattern of cracks that appear. The passage in the Gishiwajinden (Records of the Wei Dynasty of Japan) that reads "the bone is burned to tell fortune" is referring to Taisen. Later, when the method of tortoise divination was introduced from China, it gradually fell out of use.

古代に行われた卜占(ぼくせん)の一種。その方法は牡鹿(おじか)の肩骨を波波迦(ははか)（上溝桜(うわみずざくら)の古名）の木皮で焼き、そこにできた割れ目の模様によって占うのである。『魏志倭人伝』(ぎしわじんでん)に「骨を灼(や)きて以(もっ)て吉凶を占う」とあるのは、太占のことを述べたものである。のち中国より亀卜(きぼく)の法が伝わるに及び、しだいに廃れた。
