Water flea

Japanese:
Water flea
A general term for marine crustaceans of the genus Evadne in the family Coccidae. They commonly appear as coastal plankton. They are about 0.5-1mm long. At first glance, they resemble freshwater daphnia, but their carapace does not encase the leaf-like limbs, but hangs down from the back of the body, and only serves as a brood chamber. Along the coast of Japan, they appear periodically from early spring to autumn, depending on the species and the seawater temperature of their habitat. At first, only females appear, and they lay summer eggs in the brood chambers through parthenogenesis.
