A gorge in the upper reaches of the Arakawa River in western Saitama Prefecture. The gorge was formed when the Arakawa River eroded the Nagatoro crystalline schist rocks, and the area was designated a Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument in 1924. The Iwadatami rock terraces on the west bank are rock terraces with rocks such as chlorite schist and graphite schist, as well as potholes. The Chichibu Sekibeki rocks on the east bank are fault planes bounded by joints in the crystalline schist rocks, and are covered with natural forests of Quercus glauca, Quercus serrata, and Japanese boxwood. The large pink outcrop of Kami-Nagatoro is red-stained schist, a rare rock in the world. It is the center of the Nagatoro-Tamayodo Prefectural Natural Park, and is home to the Natural Science Museum.NagatoroSource: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
