Nagatoro

Japanese: 長瀞 - ながとろ
Nagatoro
A gorge in the upper reaches of the Arakawa River in western Saitama Prefecture. The gorge was formed when the Arakawa River eroded the Nagatoro crystalline schist rocks, and the area was designated a Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument in 1924. The Iwadatami rock terraces on the west bank are rock terraces with rocks such as chlorite schist and graphite schist, as well as potholes. The Chichibu Sekibeki rocks on the east bank are fault planes bounded by joints in the crystalline schist rocks, and are covered with natural forests of Quercus glauca, Quercus serrata, and Japanese boxwood. The large pink outcrop of Kami-Nagatoro is red-stained schist, a rare rock in the world. It is the center of the Nagatoro-Tamayodo Prefectural Natural Park, and is home to the Natural Science Museum.

Nagatoro

A village in the north of the Yamagata Basin in the central-eastern part of Yamagata Prefecture. It is part of Higashine City. It developed as a small castle town after Shiba Mitsuie entered the area in 1414. In 1671, the silver mine office was relocated and a magistrate's office was established. Old maps show a double moat with the main enclosure at the center, and the remains of the moat can still be seen on the outside. The Yonezu clan lived here in the late Edo period, and the lattice-shaped village remains intact to this day.
