Charles William Le Gendre

American soldier and diplomat. Also known as Li Xiandeok. Born in France, he later became a naturalized American. He served in the American Civil War and played an active role. In 1866 he became the consul in Xiamen, and in 1873, on the recommendation of Minister De Long, he became an advisor to the Japanese government's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he advised Foreign Minister Soejima Taneomi to annex Taiwan. When troops were dispatched to Taiwan in 1874, he was transferred to the rank of second-class officer in the Aborigines Bureau and served in the army. He continued to play an active role even after the United States and Britain declared neutrality. In 1890, he became an advisor on foreign affairs to Korea, and passed away in Seoul. He wrote many proposals to the Japanese government on topics such as employment for samurai, industrial development, and urban planning.

アメリカの軍人，外交官。李仙得とも称した。フランスに生まれ，のちアメリカに帰化。南北戦争に従軍し，活躍。1866年厦門（アモイ）駐在領事，73年公使デ･ロングの推薦で日本政府の外務省顧問となり，副島種臣外務卿に台湾併合を進言。74年台湾出兵に当たり蕃地事務局准二等出仕に転じ従軍，米英の中立宣言後も活躍した。90年朝鮮の外事顧問となり，京城で没した。士族授産，殖産興業，市街計画など日本政府への建言書類多数がある。
