Most of them were built in the 3rd century BC by the Seleucid king Antiochus II and named after his queen, Laodicea. The most famous is Laodicea in Phrygia, whose ruins are in Eskihisar, west of Denizli, Turkey. It flourished as a trading city along the road from Ephesus to Syria and was famous for its finances and wool. It became a Roman province in 133 BC, and a church was established there early on, making it a Christian city.
