A general term for insects of the Heteroceridae family in the order Coleoptera. The adult body is slightly rectangular with a flattened back. The antennae are thick and short, and the mandibles of males are flat and large. The tibiae of the front and middle legs are flat with a comb-like arrangement of spines. The tarsus consists of four segments. Most species are small, with a body length of 3 to 4 mm. The English name is variegated mud-loving beetle. As the name suggests, adults and larvae are known to live in mud and sand near water. Heterocerus fenestratus is distributed throughout Japan, Siberia, and Europe, and adults can be found on the mud of rice field ridges from around May.
