Brantas River (English spelling)

Japanese: ブランタス[川]（英語表記）Kali Brantas

A river in eastern Java, Indonesia. It is 320 km long and has a drainage area of 11,800 km2. Its basin includes major cities in eastern Java, such as Blitar, Malang, Kediri, Jombang, and Mojokerto, and empties into the Madura Strait at Surabaya, Indonesia's largest trading port. Its abundant water volume has made it a key transportation route since ancient times, and the basin developed as a grain-producing region, mainly for rice cultivation, and Javanese kingdoms such as the Kediri, Singhasari, and Majapahit dynasties were established based on this basin. During the colonial period, the Netherlands expanded its influence by developing plantations in this region.
