Linnaea - Linnaea

A small shrub of the Caprifoliaceae family (APG classification: Caprifoliaceae). It has a long, creeping stem, 1 mm in diameter, and thin. The leaves are opposite, oval, and 0.4-1.2 cm long. In July-August, it produces a single flower on a 5-7 cm tall flower stalk that is divided into two parts. The flowers open downward and are dorsoventral. It has four stamens, the lower two being slightly longer. The ovary is densely covered with glandular hairs, the lower one has three locules, the other two are underdeveloped, and the remaining locule bears one fertile ovule. Two bracteoles are fused to the ovary. It grows in the alpine and subalpine zones, and is widely distributed in Honshu north of Nagano Prefecture, Hokkaido, and the polar and subpolar zones of the Northern Hemisphere. It is named after the botanical taxonomist Linnaeus.

The genus Linnaea has one genus and one species, and is a circumpolar member of the Northern Hemisphere.

スイカズラ科（APG分類：スイカズラ科）の小低木。茎は長く地上をはい、径1ミリメートルと細い。葉は対生し、卵円形で長さ0.4～1.2センチメートル。7～8月、高さ5～7センチメートルで先が二つに分かれる花茎に、それぞれ1個の花をつける。花は下向きに開き、背腹性がある。雄しべは4本、下の2本はすこし長い。子房は腺毛(せんもう)を密生し、下位で3室、2室は発育不全で、他の1室に稔性胚珠(ねんせいはいしゅ)を1個つける。2枚の小包葉は子房に合着する。高山帯や亜高山帯に生え、長野県以北の本州、北海道、および北半球の寒帯、亜寒帯に広く分布する。植物分類学者リンネにちなんで、この名がある。

　リンネソウ属は1属1種で、北半球の周極要素である。
