One of the regional divisions of Fukushima Prefecture. The prefecture is divided into three parts, east and west, with Hamadori to the east of the Abukuma Plateau and Aizu to the west of the Central Backbone Mountains, and the area in between is Nakadori. Looking at it broadly, it is the basin of the Abukuma River flowing north and the Kuji River flowing south, and is a vertical valley of about 100 kilometers. However, the actual regional division has been slightly revised to match the administrative divisions, and consists of eight cities (Fukushima, Nihonmatsu, Motomiya, Koriyama, Sukagawa, Shirakawa, Tamura, and Date) and seven counties (Date, Adachi, Iwase, Nishishirakawa, Higashishirakawa, Ishikawa, and Tamura). It has long been a major transportation route from the Kanto region to Tohoku, and even today the JR Tohoku Main Line, Tohoku Shinkansen, National Route 4, and Tohoku Expressway run almost parallel to it. The prefecture is also home to approximately 1.2 million people (2010), more than half of the prefecture's population. With an inland climate, agriculture has flourished in a variety of ways, and industrial production exceeds half of the prefecture's total production.
