A former town in Kaifu County in the southern part of Tokushima Prefecture. It occupies the lower reaches of the Kaifu River, with the main settlements being Okuura and Tomoura at the river's mouth. Agriculture and forestry are the main industries, with fishing also taking place, mainly in Tomoura. The Mugi Line and Asa Kaigan Railway run through the town. The Kaifu River's tributary, the mother river, is a habitat for giant eels (a natural monument). In March 2006, it merged with Kainan Town and Shishikui Town in Kaifu County to become Kaiyo Town in Kaifu County. 26.36 km2 . 2,667 people (2003). 徳島県南部,海部郡の旧町。海部川下流域を占め,河口の奥浦と鞆浦(ともうら)が主集落。農林業が主で,鞆浦を中心に漁業も営む。牟岐(むぎ)線,阿佐海岸鉄道が通じる。海部川の支流母川はオオウナギ生息地(天然記念物)。2006年3月,海部郡海南町,宍喰町と合併し町制,海部郡海陽町となる。26.36km2。2667人(2003)。
