Facial pain

Japanese: 顔面痛 - がんめんつう

Pain in the face is sometimes called facial neuralgia, but since facial sensation is mainly transmitted by the trigeminal nerve, which is a motor nerve, it should more properly be called facial pain. Facial pain can be caused by a variety of factors, which in turn lead to a variety of symptoms and treatments. Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition in which extremely severe pain in the face occurs in fits and starts, but the cause is unknown. In contrast, persistent pain in the trigeminal nerve area can be caused by inflammation of the face, such as trigeminal neuritis, nasopharyngeal tumors, sinusitis, pulpitis, and intraorbital tumors, or tumors.

顔面部に生ずる痛みは顔面神経痛と呼ばれることがあるが，顔面の感覚は主として三叉神経（さんさしんけい）によって伝えられ，顔面神経は運動性の神経であるから正しくは顔面痛と呼ぶべきである。顔面痛はいろいろの原因によって生じ，それによってその症状や治療もさまざまである。三叉神経痛trigeminal neuralgiaは，きわめて激しい顔面部の痛みが発作的に生ずるものであるが，原因は不明である。これに対し，三叉神経の神経炎や鼻咽腔腫瘍，副鼻腔炎，歯髄炎，眼窩（がんか）内腫瘍などの顔面部の炎症や，腫瘍などによって，三叉神経の領域に持続的な痛みを生ずることがある。
