Sutra Enlightenment - Kyogaku

Japanese: 経覚 - きょうがく

1395-1473 A monk from the Muromachi period.
Born November 6, 1402. Son of Kujo Tsunenori. Hosso sect. In 1401 he became the head priest of Daijo-in Temple at Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara, and from 1408 he served as the head priest at the same temple four times. In 1411 he became the chief priest. In 1416 he retired to Hoju-ji Temple against the orders of Ashikaga Yoshinori. In 1418 he built a castle on Mt. Onisono and fought against Tsutsui Jun'ei and others, but was defeated and fled to An'i-ji Temple. He died August 27, 1422. He was 79 years old. He was commonly known as An'i-jidono. His diary contains the title "Kyōkaku Shiyōshō."

応永2年11月6日生まれ。九条経教(つねのり)の子。法相(ほっそう)宗。応永17年奈良興福寺大乗院門跡(もんぜき),33年以降同寺別当を4回つとめる。永享3年大僧正。10年足利義教の命に反して宝寿寺に隠居。文安元年鬼薗(おにその)山に築城して筒井順永らとたたかい,敗れて安位寺にのがれた。文明5年8月27日死去。79歳。通称は安位寺殿。日記に「経覚私要鈔」。
