Nakatsue [village] - Nakatsue

Japanese: 中津江[村] - なかつえ

A village in Hita County, southwest of Oita Prefecture. Population 1,360 (1995). Located at the westernmost tip of the prefecture, the village is surrounded by mountainous areas such as Mt. Togami (1,150m), Mt. Mikuni (994m), and Mt. Shuten-doji (1,181m). The Taio River flows east through the center of the village and joins the Tsue River, which is part of the Chikugo River system, at the eastern end of the village. Settlements are scattered along the Tsue River and its tributaries. National Route 442 runs along the Taio River, and Route 387 runs along the eastern edge of the village, heading towards Kumamoto. Taio Gold Mine in the west was one of Japan's leading gold mines until it closed in 1972, but since 1983 it has been open to the public as Kyushu's first underground museum, with gold veins and mining remains restored.

大分県南西部，日田（ひた）郡の村。人口1360(1995)。県の最西端に位置し，周囲を渡神（とがみ）岳(1150m)，三国山(994m)，酒呑童子（しゆてんどうじ）山(1181m)などに囲まれた山岳地帯で，中央を鯛生（たいお）川が東流し，村の東端で筑後川水系の津江川に合流する。集落は津江川とその支流沿いに散在し，鯛生川沿いに国道442号線，村域東端を熊本へ向かう387号線が通る。西部の鯛生金山は1972年の閉山まで日本有数の金山であったが，83年より九州初の地底博物館として金鉱脈，採掘跡などを復元し，公開している。
