Amada Guan
Year of death: January 17, 1904 (Meiji 37)
Year of birth: July 20, 1854 (August 13, 1854)
A poet and Zen monk from the Meiji period. Adopted son of Shimizu Jirocho. Childhood name Hisagoro, later Goro. Also called Tetsubi. Son of Amada Heitayu and Nami, samurai of Iwakidaira Domain (Iwaki City) in Mutsu Province. At the age of 15, he participated in the Boshin War, during which he was separated from his parents and sister. He traveled to Taiwan to search for his relatives and to express his hatred for the clan's political clique. He plotted to take part in the Southwest War and assassinate Iwakura Tomomi, but was astonished by his rebellion and introduced Shimizu to Jirocho in 1881 (Meiji 14), and he became his adopted son. In February 1884, after Jirocho was imprisoned in a gambling hunt, he wrote and published "Tokai Yukyoden" as a petition for his life in April. Despite his foster father's imprisonment, in August of the same year, one month before the Freedom and People's Rights Movement's Kabasan Uprising, he suddenly terminated the adoption, became a monk, established a hermitage on Kiyomizuzaka in Kyoto, and began a life of waka poetry and pilgrimages to pray for the souls of those who died in the civil war of the Meiji Restoration. He wrote the Pilgrimage Diary (1894). His waka poetry was in the Manyo style, and he was the first of Japan's intellectual yakuza, influencing even Masaoka Shiki. <References> Guan Complete Works
