Xiamen - Amoy

Japanese: 厦門 - あもい

A commercial and industrial port city at the end of the Yingxia Railway on the southeastern coast of Fujian Province, China. It is also called Sugumo. It has a population of 630,000 (1994). It consists of the area including Tong'an County at the mouth of the Jiulong River, Xiamen Island, and Gulangyu Island. The city is on the west coast of Xiamen Island, and was connected to the mainland after the construction of a sea breakwater in 1956. It was the gateway to Zhangzhou, which had prospered as a foreign trade port since the Song Dynasty, and the many small islands nearby made it a hotbed of pirates and smugglers. During the Ming Dynasty, a city wall was built on Jiaheyu Island (now Xiamen Island) in Tong'an County, and it was called Xiamen City.

中国福建省南東部沿海，鷹厦（ようか）鉄道の終点にある港湾商工業都市。鷺門ともいう。人口63万(1994)。九竜江河口の同安県を含む地域と厦門島，鼓浪嶼（ころうしよ）からなる。市街は厦門島の西岸部にあり，1956年海堤建設後，大陸とつながった。宋代より外国貿易港として繁栄した漳州の門戸にあたり，かつ付近には小島が多く，海賊，密貿易者の淵叢をなしていた。明代に同安県嘉禾嶼（かかしよ）(今の厦門島)に城壁を築き厦門城と称した。
