A type of seat.

(1) In ancient times, the furniture of the Imperial Court was called a shoji, which was shaped like a four-legged table, with a slatted top and a round seat made of Japanese slats. Depending on the size, it was called a large shoji or a small shoji, and depending on whether it was painted, it was called a lacquered shoji or a plain wood shoji. There are two shoji in the Shosoin Repository as examples from the Nara period, measuring 233 cm in length, 120 cm in width, and 40 cm in height. According to the Todaiji Temple Offerings Book, these were painted with whitewash, had a tatami mat with a black brocade edge on top of a slat base, and were covered with a brown brocade futon and a lined blanket, and were considered to be beds.

(2) Among samurai, it was used as a seat for the commander behind the curtains in outdoor military camps; it was a type of folding agura.

腰掛の一種。

(1)宮廷調度では古く床子(しょうじ)といって、四脚付きの机のような形をし、上面は簀子(すのこ)（桟を張ったもの）からなり、高麗端(こうらいはし)、菅円座(すげえんざ)を敷く。大小によって大床几・小床几といい、塗装の有無によって漆床几、白木床几とよばれた。奈良時代の遺例として正倉院に2基あり、長さ233センチメートル、幅120センチメートル、高さ40センチメートルで、これは『東大寺献物帳』によって、胡粉(ごふん)を塗り、簀子の台上に黒地錦(にしき)端の畳を敷き、褐色地の錦の敷きぶとんと袷(あわせ)の掛けぶとんで2枚をあわせた大きさであることがわかり、寝台とみなされる。

(2)武家の間では、野外の軍陣で帷幕(いばく)のうちの主将の腰掛として用いるが、これは折り畳みのできる胡床(あぐら)の類である。
