A type of body modification, a custom in which the surface of the body is artificially damaged for religious, decorative, or status-symbolizing purposes. The San people of Africa inflict scars on the area between the eyebrows and shoulders during their coming-of-age ceremonies, which are both decorative and symbolic of the person's joining the ranks of a full-fledged adult, and also have a magical meaning in anticipation of hunting. This custom is also common among the Australian aborigines and peoples of Africa, New Guinea, and Melanesia.
