A bay facing the Pacific Ocean on the east coast of Okinawa's main island. It is a closed water area surrounded by Katsuren Peninsula, Chinen Cape, and offshore islands Kudakajima and Tsukenjima, covering an area of approximately 220 square kilometers. Coral reefs are well developed on the open ocean side, but there are only scattered reefs in the inner bay. The entire bay was designated an important port in 1974, and is known as Nakagusuku Bay Port. After Okinawa was returned to the mainland, a development plan for Nakagusuku Bay was drawn up, and the site for the National Athletic Meet (1987) was built through land reclamation, and industrial land is currently being developed.
