Year of death: 1923.9.18 (1923.9.18) Born: October 7, 1830 An American Board missionary who came to Japan during the Meiji period. Born in Honolulu as the second son of missionary PJ Gulick, he studied at Oahu College and served as a missionary there before arriving in Japan in 1871. He joined DC Green in Kobe. The following year he moved to Osaka, where he lectured on the New Testament in English for free, attracting many students. He returned to Kobe in 1884, and the following year he worked hard to publish the first weekly newspaper in the Christian world in Japan, "Shichiichi Zatsuho." In addition to information inside and outside of Christianity, he contributed to the dissemination of knowledge on Western culture, science, hygiene, and more. From 1891, he evangelized in various places, including Niigata, Okayama, and Kumamoto. He returned to Japan in 1892, and later helped with Japanese evangelism in Hawaii. His simple lifestyle stood out in the missionary community. His brothers, sister, and nephew were also part of a large missionary family.
