An old town in Shimoagata County, which occupies the southern part of Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture. Izuhara on the east coast was the ancient provincial capital and in early modern times was the castle town of the So clan, which prospered through trade with the continent. Samurai residences remain and it is served by regular shipping routes from Hakata, making it the center of Tsushima. It is also the tourist base for Iki-Tsushima Quasi-National Park. With little arable land, the town is home to coastal fishing and produces shiitake mushrooms. The Taishu Mine produced zinc and lead, but closed in 1973. In March 2004, it merged with Mitsushima Town and Toyotama Town in Shimoagata County, Mine Town in Kamiagata County, Kamiagata Town, and Kamitsushima Town to form Tsushima City. Area: 175.59 km2 . Population: 14,950 (2003). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
