It belongs to Nakagami County, Okinawa Prefecture, and is bounded by Ginowan City to the west and Nakagusuku Bay to the east. Its population was 13,832 (1995). It consists of fertile alluvial lowlands along the coast and hilly areas behind. During the Sho Taikyu period (1454-60) of the First Sho Dynasty, the loyal retainer Gosamaru was deployed to check Amawari, who was based in Katsuren Castle on the Yokatsu Peninsula, and built and expanded Nakagusuku Castle on the northern plateau. However, Amawari instead slandered him and attacked Nakagusuku Castle, and Gosamaru committed suicide without firing a single shot in retaliation.
