Quebec Act

Quebec Act

It is also translated as the Quebec Ordinance. It is a law enacted by the British Parliament in 1774 to govern Quebec, which had been a new colony 10 years earlier. It significantly expanded the boundaries of the colony of Quebec, decided to implement British criminal law and French civil law, allowed Catholics to hold public office, and preserved the privileges of the Catholic clergy and the manor system. It made no mention of the parliamentary system. The governance under the Quebec Ordinance was so different from that in the southern British colonies that would later form the United States of America that it angered the southern colonists and was one of the factors that led to the outbreak of the War of Independence the following year. The colony of Quebec was asked to join the fight for independence, but the French Canadians in Quebec preferred the paternalistic governance under the Quebec Ordinance and did not participate in the Revolutionary Revolution.
