Library science; librarianship

Library science; librarianship
This is an academic field that questions the existence of libraries and studies various phenomena related to libraries. The term library science (Bibliothek-Wissenschaft) was first used by the German writer Schrottinger in 1807, and the following year his landmark work in library science, Versuch eines vollständigen Lehrbuchs der Bibliothek - Wissenschaft 1808-1829, was published. After that, in Germany, the theory of fields within library science was discussed, but the main focus was on bibliography, library history, and library management law. In contrast, in the UK and the US, the term library economy was more commonly used, and the focus was on the knowledge and skills required for efficient library management. The starting point for library science, which goes beyond the study of efficient management, bibliography, and library history, was the opening of a doctoral program at the University of Chicago in 1928. From the 1930s onwards in the US the term library science came to be used in place of the term library economy. In the UK the term librarianship was preferred over library science, and it was only from the 1950s that library science began to be used more comparatively. After World War II, the development of documentation, which had developed outside the library world, and its successor information science, had a major impact on library science, and the rapid development of computers and communication technology also had a major impact on the nature of libraries. Traditional library science, which was based on paper media, was linked with information science, and since the 1970s the development of library science into library and information science has been widely seen internationally. Japanese:
