The Minamoto clan was founded by Emperor Daigo and was given the surname Minamoto. In the first generation, both Minamoto Takaakira and Kaneakira (later Prince Kaneakira) rose to the position of Minister of the Left, and others were given the surnames Jimyo, Masaakira, and Tameakira. In the second generation, the princes Katsuakira, Daiakira, Shigeakira, Shikiakira, Ariakira, Akiakira, and Moriakira were given the surnames. In the Takaakira line, his son Toshikata (one of the Four Counselor) and Tsunefusa were active during the reign of the Emperor Ichijo and Go-Ichijo, while Toshikata's sons Akimoto and Takakuni (the Chief Counselor of Uji), Akimoto's sons Suketsuna and Mago Iekata, Takakuni's sons Takatoshi, Takatsuna, and Toshiakira, Takatoshi's son Toshizane, and Toshiakira's son Yoshitoshi all rose to the ranks of nobility and were active during the reign of the Emperor Go-Ichijo and the Insei period. 醍醐天皇を祖とする賜姓源氏。一世賜姓では源高明,兼明(のちに兼明親王)がともに左大臣に昇り,そのほか自明,允明,為明等の賜姓がある。二世賜姓には克明,代明,重明,式明,有明,章明,盛明の諸親王の流がある。高明流では,その子俊賢(四納言の一人)や経房が一条~後一条朝に活躍し,俊賢の子顕基・隆国(宇治大納言),顕基の子資綱・孫家賢や,隆国の子隆俊・隆綱・俊明,隆俊の子俊実,俊明の子能俊らは公卿に昇り,後一条朝~院政時代に活躍した。
