This mammal belongs to the family Beaked whale, suborder Odontoceti. It has one pair of flat, large teeth near the center of the lower jaw, and in mature males, they are 15 cm long, 10 cm wide, and 2.5 cm thick, hence the name. It is one of 12 species in the genus Beaked whale, and is found in the North Pacific Ocean. All species in this genus are rare, and we only have information about their biology from carcasses that occasionally wash up on the shore. The largest individuals currently known are 5.25 m long for both sexes, and their appearance resembles that of a beaked whale, but their back is gray-black, their underside is pale, and their body is flattened from side to side.

ハクジラ亜目アカボウクジラ科の哺乳類。歯は下顎中央付近に1対あり，扁平で大きく，成熟した雄では長さ15cm，幅10cm，厚さ2.5cmあるのでこの名がある。オオギハクジラ属12種の一つで北太平洋に分布する。本属の種類はいずれもまれな種類であり，ときおり海岸に漂着する死体から生物学的知見を得るのみである。現在知られている最大個体は，雌雄とも5.25mで，外形はアカボウクジラに似るが，背面は灰黒色で下面は淡色，体は左右に扁平である。
