A popular literature prize for new writers named in memory of the writer Sanjugo Naoki. Its official name is the Sanjugo Naoki Prize. It was proposed by Naoki's friend Kan Kikuchi and was established in 1935 (Showa 10) at the same time as the Akutagawa Prize, and continues to this day. The prize is awarded twice a year by a selection committee. It was initially run by Bungeishunju, and since 1938 has been run by the Japan Literature Promotion Association. The winning work was published in All Yomimono, except for two times just after World War II. In the early days, when the first prize was awarded to Shotaro Kawaguchi's Tsuruhachi Tsurujiro and other works, other writers also won, including Kaionji Chogoro and Ibuse Masuji, and writers such as Shishi Bunroku and Kubo Sakae were also nominated, solidifying the foundation of the prize. It was temporarily discontinued during and after the war. After the war, when the award was revived, a succession of laureates brought vitality to the field, including Genji Keita, Nitta Jiro, Kon Toko, Shiba Ryotaro, Ikenami Shotaro, Mizukami Tsutomu, Yamaguchi Hitomi, Tachihara Masaaki, Itsuki Hiroyuki, Nosaka Akiyuki, Sato Aiko, Watanabe Junichi, Inoue Hisashi, Fujisawa Shuhei, Saki Ryuzo, Miyao Tomiko, Atoda Takashi, Mukoda Kuniko, Hayashi Mariko, and Yamada Eimi. Especially in the 1980s, as literature became more popular, the scope of the award seemed to expand even further. Laureates in the 1990s include Dekune Tatsuro (1944-), Takamura Kaoru, Osawa Arimasa, Asada Jiro, Kurumatani Chokitsu, and Nakanishi Rei (1938-2020), while recipients in the 2000s include Funado Yoichi and Kyogoku Natsuhiko.
