The Balkans also have a rich tradition of fantasy folk tales and lyric songs (doinǎ), featuring the so-called "beautiful boys".

The oldest surviving Romanian documents date from the first half of the 16th century, and in the second half of the 16th century the translation and publication of religious texts, including the Bible, became very popular.
