Also known as the sparrow pufferfish (Fukuoka, Kumamoto). A marine fish (illustration) of the Tetraodontiformes order, Tetraodontidae family. Inhabits the coasts of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and is common in southern Japan. The skin is smooth and without small spines. The dorsal side has dark brown worm-like spots on a pale blue background, and the ventral side is white. The fins have no spots, the anal fin is pale and sickle-shaped, and the lower part of the caudal fin is white. Generally, it is a small pufferfish, about 18 cm in total length, but the Okinawan pufferfish, which can grow over 30 cm, is also considered to be of the same species. スズメフグ(福岡,熊本)ともいう。フグ目フグ科の海産魚(イラスト)。本州,四国,九州の沿岸に分布し,南日本に多い。皮膚は滑らかで,小棘(しようきよく)がない。背側は淡青色の地に暗褐色の虫食い状斑紋があり,腹側は白い。ひれには斑紋がなく,しりびれは淡色で鎌状をなし,尾びれの下部は白い。一般には全長18cm内外の小型のフグであるが,30cmを超えるオキナコモンフグも同種とされる。肝臓,卵巣,皮膚などの毒性は強いが,筋肉はさほど強くない。
