Seth - Seto (English spelling)

Seth - Seto (English spelling)

A male god who plays an important role in the creation myth of ancient Egypt. Two gods and two goddesses were born to Geb, the god of the earth, and Nut, the goddess of the sky. Set was the youngest of these two, his older brother Osiris, and his older sisters Isis and Nepthys. According to the Osiris myth told by Plutarch, Set was jealous of his older brother Osiris's fame, and killed him by a scheme, dismembered his body, and threw it into the Nile River. The body was collected by Isis, who became Osiris' wife, and Set was avenged by Horus, the male god born to Osiris and Isis. Set is often depicted as a donkey-like beast, and was considered the god of the city of Ombos and one of the nine gods of the city of Heliopolis. In the myth of Memphis, Set is considered the god of Upper Egypt, Osiris the god of Lower Egypt, and Horus, who destroyed Set, is considered the one who unified Upper and Lower Egypt. In later times he was considered the representative of evil, and in Greece he was identified with the many-headed monster Typhon.
