?‐720 A Berber commander of the army that conquered Andalusia. He served under Musa b. Nuṣayr (640-716/717), governor of the Umayyad province of Ifriqiya, and was head of the garrison at Tangier. In 711, he was appointed commander of a Muslim army of 7,000 soldiers (most of whom were Berbers), and invaded Andalusia and destroyed the Visigothic Kingdom. The following year, he competed with Musa, who set out on the campaign, and conquered Andalusia. Gibraltar is a corrupted version of Jabal al-Ṭāriq, a mountain in Tariq.
