Ingeshu - Ingeshu

...refers to monks of noble origin (later including imperial family) and the temples where they reside. The title of monzeki is said to have originated when Emperor Uda became a monk and entered Ninna-ji Temple in 899 (Shotai 2). At that time, the aristocrats who followed the retired emperor into the priesthood and resided in sub-temples within the temple were called inkashu, a sign that they were not monks of commoner origin, i.e. ordinary monks. After that, monzeki temples in Nara, Kyoto, Mount Hiei, Mount Koya, and other places had inke (inke) that supported the Buddhist and secular affairs of the monzeki temples, and the inke were made up of learned monks....
