Japanese: 熊十力 - ゆうじゅうりき

Chinese philosopher and thinker. Born in Huanggang, Hubei Province. In his youth, he participated in the Wuchang Uprising. In 1920, he entered the Nanjing Inner China College and studied Buddhism. After teaching at Peking University, he spent the Anti-Japanese War period at the Sichuan Fuxing College, and thereafter lived in Shanghai. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he was invited as a special guest to the Chinese People's Consultative Conference and served as a national committee member. Drawing on his deep knowledge of Buddhist studies, he advocated a reinterpretation of Confucius and Confucianism, and examined the new development of Confucian thought and its influence and role in modern and contemporary China, in an attempt to create a theoretical foundation for the modernization of China. He is also considered a representative thinker of Neo-Confucianism. His main work, "The Original Confucianism," is highly regarded as a pioneer of modern Neo-Confucian thought.

中国の哲学者，思想家。湖北省黄岡の出身。青年時代に武昌蜂起に参加。20年，南京支那内学院に入学，仏教を学ぶ。北京大学で教えたのち，四川福性書院で抗日戦期を過ごし，以後は上海で暮らした。中華人民共和国成立後，特別招待者として中国人民協商会議に招かれ全国委員を歴任した。仏教学の深い造詣をもとに孔子と儒教の再解釈を提唱，儒家思想の新たな発展と中国の近現代に対する影響と役割を検討して中国の近代化のための理論的な拠り所をつくろうとした。新儒家の代表的思想家ともされる。主著の《原儒》は現代の新儒家思想の先駆として高く評価されている。
