The Staufen dynasty was the German king (reigned 1169-1197) and Holy Roman Emperor (1191-1197). He also served as King of Sicily (reigned 1194-1197). Son of Frederick I. He reconciled with his arch enemy Henry the Lion through the imprisonment of King Richard I of England, and thereafter secured dominance in international politics. He conquered Naples and Sicily, but his plan for hereditary succession to the empire failed due to opposition from the various nobles, and his plan to annex the Byzantine Empire also failed.
